Roses Are Red, Valentines Are Green: Five Eco-Friendly Romance Tips

Posted by dmhendricks on February 8, 2008

Roses, Chocolate and RomanceOn Valentine’s Day, most people see red. Josie Brown hopes they’ll think green, too.

“As February 14th approaches, most of us are considering how we can best show our loved ones that they are special to us,” explains Brown, who is the relationships editor for SingleMindedWomen.com. “But your romantic celebration doesn’t necessarily mean using up Mother Nature’s precious resources.”

SingleMindedWomen.com has come up with five tips that will help save the environment while stoking the passion:

Tip #1: Get away—by staying in.
“Set up your bedroom as a love shack,” suggests Brown. “Rinse your favorite sheets in scented detergent, sprinkle your favorite perfume under your bedspread, or place lavender under your pillow.”

Another sexy scenario: set up a treasure hunt in your home.

“Write down clues—on recycled paper, of course—that lead your loved one to some heartfelt mementos. Items like photos of the two you, or old menus or matchboxes from your favorite haunts, will remind your significant other why she fell in love with you in the first place. Maybe the last clue leads her to a picnic for two, right there in your favorite room of the house: the bedroom. We’ll be posting a great menu on SingleMindedWomen.com’s relationship channel that’s quick, easy, tasty and romantic—and uses leftovers of course..”

Tip #2: Conserve water by bathing together.
“A bubble bath—either before or after sex—is one of the most romantic acts a couple can do together. The key word here is togetherness. Sure, showers can be sensual, but bubble baths conserve more water—and are playful, too.”

Tip #3: Don’’ buy her roses; instead, get her a rose bush.
“This year, forgo the usual dozen roses, and give the gift that keeps giving, year after year,” explains Brown. “Rose plants come in all sizes—either as bushes or vines—it can thrive in something as small as an apartment deck. And colors range from pinks, corals, and deep reds, to yellows, golds, and whites. You know her favorite, so go for it. Or choose one with a name that may resonate with her. For example, if she’s a fashionista, she’ll love the Miss Dior. If she’s a Beatles fan, there’s the Penny Lane. Bottom line: Be creative.”

Tip #4: Light her fire, with scented candles.
“Sadly, burning wood in your fireplace sends out a lot of toxins,” says Brown. “So instead, line up candles of all different shapes and sizes inside the fireplace, and have them lit when she gets home. She’ll want to make love right then and there, by candlelight.”

Tip #5: Make her Valentine’s card.
“Use old photos that will pull at her heart string. Perhaps one of your baby photos—next to hers. But remember: what will win her over is the personal message you choose to write inside,” suggests Brown. “Just don’t type it, or send it via email.”

But wouldn’t emailing save paper?

“Sure,” says Brown. “But on this day, the primary goal is to be romantic, right?”

Another thing that will kill any kindled passion, warns Brown, is recycling last year’s Valentine’s card.

“My husband did that to me one year. He just crossed out the date, and wrote in a new one. That put him in the dog house until our anniversary. Being green is one thing. Being cheap or lazy is something altogether different.”

Dream Green This Christmas: Five Gift Giving Tips For A Holiday Dressed In Holly

Posted by dmhendricks on December 10, 2007

Gifts equal shopping. Shopping equals more travel, and more travel equals higher gas usage, which equals increased carbon emissions. Many of the gifts given could end up generating more waste in our landfills (packaging and decorative wrapping) and increased stress levels, due to the hectic race to find and purchase the perfect gifts (remember, part of living green is living healthy).

What to do? Boycott the Christmas gift giving tradition? Of course not, there are alternatives. Here are five tips to get you started.

1. Plan your shopping trips, so that they occur along your usual routes as much as possible. If you work downtown take a stroll by the shops. Is there a shopping center or mall along your route from work? Check it out?

2. Carpool. If you’re planning to go to the local outlet mall, get your friends together and make it a shopping date.

3. Give sustainable gifts: water bottles, canvas shopping bags (decorate them with fabric pens or iron on patches for a personal touch), or stainless steel travel mugs. Check out other suggestions on Treehugger’s Holiday Gift Guide.

4. Give recycled gifts. Look in your closet, your cabinet or storage space. What’s in there that you haven’t used in the longest time, is gently used and could be of service to a family member or friend? Read Brian Smith’s story at Altenet.org. You can also recycle or create decorative wrapping paper and cards using old Holiday cards, decorations and papers that you have around the house.

5. Give homemade gifts. If you make great holiday cookies, pies, or other treats. Whip up a batch and give them as gifts in reusable decorative container. If you’re an artist, create miniature works to share with family and friends.

Send Halloween E-Cards for a Cause and Some Laughs

Posted by dmhendricks on October 30, 2007

smashed-pumpkin_600.jpgI’m horrible when it comes to sending personal correspondence. I’m the person that remembers that birthday, holiday or other cards need to be mailed the week before, then I forget it until the day of. Luckily for me, there’s a wonderful little thing called email. I save money (no postage), and I don’t generate more refuse to be tossed into a landfill. Check out Grist’s Halloween e-cards. Put a smile on a friend’s face, and spread the word, they can help make our enviroment a healthier one.

Living Green In The City

Posted by dmhendricks on October 20, 2007

The changes in our environment are having broad ranging effects on all of us on planet earth. Whether you live close to nature in the wilds of Alaska, or in the heart of an urban center, you know that the world is getting warmer, acquiring food a little harder or more costly, and that the seasons aren’t quite what they used to be.

In order to prevent the dire predicitons of environmentalists and scientists becoming a foregone conclusion, everyday people and industrial players are going to have to change the way they operate. The negative effects of climate change, the depletion of natural resources, as well as the pollution generated by business and daily living, can be curbed if everyone makes simple changes that conserve energy and resources.

This challenge to the modern lifestyle many us know and love also holds a silver lining. It could provide a partial solution to the economic and social challenges which face many people living in urban and former manufacturing centers. In short, it could be the gateway to jobs, financial security and social stability for those people currently classified as unemployed and the working poor.
